CIWM (WAMITAB) Level 4 Certificate in Waste and Resource Management – VRQ
This qualification forms part of the CIWM (WAMITAB) Operator Competence Scheme and is delivered using the classroom based ‘taught and tested’ route. It is an alternative way to achieve your CIWM (WAMITAB) competence, making it a great qualification for those who want to formalise their knowledge and skills in the waste industry without having to complete an observation onsite. Learners can also choose from a range of optional units tailored to the specific activity on their site.
This VRQ course is aimed at those developing a new waste treatment facility that requires a primary competence qualification to get an environmental permit, but do not have access to an operational site.
The course comprises of 5 mandatory units and 1 or more optional units; this will depend on the type of facility you wish to operate. Each unit is covered by 1 day of attendance.

- Principles of sustainable waste and resource management
- Legislation for the operation of waste management facilities
- Stakeholder communication and other non-legislative factors
Optional
- Principles and practices of managing a physical treatment processing facility – VRQ406
- Principles and practices of managing a hazardous waste storage and transfer facility – VRQ414
- Principles and practices of managing an end of life vehicle facility – VRQ412
- Principles and practices of managing a WEEE facility – VRQ416
- Principles and practices of managing a metals recycling facility – VRQ413
The work for each unit is completed in your own time; this will comprise of knowledge question papers covering the unit being provided at the end of each of the sessions. These are provided in word format for ease of completing and submitting for draft review by the tutor prior to approval from the assessor.
During the classroom sessions you will be provided with materials and reference tools to assist you complete work for each unit.
There is no set timescale to provide this work, however if all units for the qualification are not achieved within 12 months you will be required to re-register, and work done can be carried over to the next 12 months. You would also have to be mindful that completing with 12 months may be a stipulation of your permit.
